How GANNI Styles Brand Identity Through Experimentation

Introduction: who is GANNI?

GANNI is a Danish contemporary luxury fashion brand renowned for its ready-to-wear collections, including clothing, shoes, and accessories.

Founded in 2000 and known for its effortless Scandi-cool aesthetic, the brand has evolved into a global name, offering a fresh and vibrant take on modern women’s fashion. With a focus on responsible practices, GANNI is committed to positively impacting the planet, aligning with sustainability initiatives such as using organic and recycled materials. Ganni sells its collections online to customers worldwide, including Europe, North America, Asia, and Australia, making its mark in over 40 countries.

At the heart of GANNI’s business is a community focused on changing a broken fashion system. Led by Ditte and Nicolaj Reffstrup, the brand uses responsible practices as a force of positive change for style, people, and planet.

GANNI has been creating bold, expressive, and responsibly-minded products for radical optimists everywhere. More than just a fashion brand, Thay embrace innovation for responsible progress, integrating creative approaches into every aspect of its business, from products to brand identity.

What does experimentation bring to GANNI?

Identifying itself as a ‘progressive luxury’ brand, experimentation plays a crucial role in how GANNIi’s market position, being customer-centric and defining their brand identity.

While they benchmark and look at other luxury brands, they use experimentation to make better decisions on their brand. It allows them to understand how users behave online, how they engage, how they interact and how they see GANNI. Monika Tamics,  Director of Digital Product, explains “We are looking for what customers are struggling with. We identify these, come up with a solution, test it and enhance the online shopping experience by making it easier to find and purchase products, and provide a smoother, more enjoyable shopping journey for greater satisfaction.”

They use AB Tasty to power their experimentation program, successfully running tests that consistently boost conversions and AOV, improve site functionality, and make decisions based on data. By iterating on key features like search, checkout, and more, GANNI continues to improve their site.

Monika goes on to say: “AB Tasty is a platform where there are no limitations, it’s very user friendly, and anyone at any time can go in to look at the data and provide a better user experience for our customers.”

“AB Tasty is a platform where there are no limitations, it’s very user friendly, and anyone at any time can go in to look at the data and provide a better user experience for our customers.”

Monika Tamics, Ganni Director of Digital Product

Driving brand identity through continuous experimentation

GANNI prioritizes the customer in their testing process by identifying pain points in the user journey and implementing solutions to enhance the online experience. To ensure these tests are effective from a business perspective, GANNI’s team evaluates the entire customer funnel, from the initial interaction to the final checkout. This comprehensive approach has revealed key insights.

By focusing on these incremental changes, GANNI’s experimentation strategy not only improves site performance, but also deepens customer engagement, encouraging browsing and product discovery. With AB Tasty empowering them to scale their experimentation program, Ganni is able to continuously test, learn, and optimize their digital experience. Each change brings deeper insights into their identity, helping to define who Ganni is as a brand.

GANNI conducted a large-scale analysis of their website to identify low-hanging opportunities that could make a big impact. One area they quickly observed was the high number of users searching for specific products, a behavior commonly seen across fashion brands. Site search is a powerful tool, often driving higher conversion rates. In fact, studies show users are nearly 40% more likely to convert than those who don’t use it. GANNI’s challenge with their search bar was that it wasn’t prominent enough.

They found that visitors who used their original search function experienced a significant drop in conversion rates. To address this, they focused on making the search bar more visible and user-friendly. They implemented several tests, including adding a border around the search bar, increasing the visibility of the magnifying glass icon, and testing different variations such as a longer search bar with a text hint.

From these simple yet impactful tests, GANNI achieved a 7.5% increase in conversion rates and a massive 21.9% uplift in users engaging with the mobile search function.

Another example of incremental learning, GANNI’s test-and-learn mindset allowed them to experiment with changes that significantly improve their user’s customer journey. By optimizing the search experience, GANNIi made it easier for customers to find products they love, driving higher engagement.

Ganni’s checkout challenge

The checkout process presented another key opportunity for GANNI’s experimentation team. Initially, users were required to enter their email address before accessing the checkout page – a step that caused a drop-off in the funnel. GANNI hypothesized that this barrier led customers to assume guest checkout wasn’t an option, prompting cart abandonment.

Not all tests are winning tests and GANNI’s experimentation on the checkout page is a good example of this. During the first round of tests, designed to clarify the availability of guest checkout, gave inconclusive results. Undeterred by the initial results, GANNI’s experimentation program continued testing.

They refined their approach, focusing on simplifying the checkout flow by combining the email entry and information input into one step. The team’s determination paid off, generating an impressive uplift in conversions.

Although it was frustrating when the first round of tests didn’t deliver the expected results, GANNI’s Senior Digital Project Manager, Anders Skaarup, notes how they “provided some kind of insights toward the overall purchase funnel or discovery funnel for the user.” By testing barriers in the user journey, GANNI not only improved conversion rates but also deepened their understanding of how small changes can have a significant impact on customer behavior and these learnings led to them adding more and more improvements on the checkout page.

Small changes, big impact

The checkout process or search function can make or break a customer’s decision to complete their purchase. GANNI’s experience is a testament to the power of iterative testing. By identifying key drop-off points and continuously refining their approach, the team is able to remove friction points and unlock valuable insights into user behavior. Not only does this improve CRO and minimize potential revenue loss, but AB Tasty also improves the brand’s overall digital experience. GANNI isn’t reliant on gut feelings or abstract concepts when it comes to experimentation – the team tests, learns and makes data-driven decisions that shape their brand identity.

A better site for a better customer experience

GANNI wants to speak to their customer group – and the more they can understand them, the better the user’s digital experience. By fostering collaboration across departments, they ensure that all teams are aligned with customer-centric goals.

As Anders Skaarup, Senior Digital Product Manager states, “This is the way that decisions can be made together – based on data that allows us to become an elevated brand. It also means that we can share insights and help prevent loss – it isn’t simply about gaining more – but being able to capitalize on what is there. At GANNI, we want to speak to our customer group – and the more we can understand them, the better the digital experience.”

Anders Skaarup, Ganni Senior Digital Product Manager

Brand identity

By continuously testing and learning, they gain real-time insights into customer preferences, allowing them to quickly adapt and deliver a digital experience that resonates deeply with their audience.

With AB Tasty, GANNI may gain insights into what drives revenue and user conversion, enabling faster implementation of new designs, but the real benefit is how it informs who they are as a brand and how this relates to their customers.

This unified approach to experimentation, continuous learning, small iterations and identifying areas to improve helps to build a customer experience that GANNI’s audience love and strengthens their market position.

King Living Increases Revenue 15% by A/B Testing on Site

+15% Clicks

+15% Overall Revenue

King Living is an award-winning Australian furniture retailer that has made a name for itself through selling bespoke items. After noticing a substantial number of drop-offs, King Living utilised AB Tasty to run two experiments to better understand consumers’ purchase behaviour, and, in turn, make data-driven decisions to improve user experience and generate more sales.

Improve product findability for customers

King Living’s website was very content heavy, and customers often had to navigate through content blocks before reaching the product. The team hypothesized that this resulted in drop-offs because it took too long for customers to find what they were looking for.

With this hypothesis in mind, King Living chose to experiment by hiding secondary navigation and displaying products before content. This move resulted in 15% more clicks on product images and 90% increased revenue for all of King Living’s ‘Jasper’ packages.

Consumers are more likely to take action if the information they are seeking is clearly presented to them. In this case, images were more effective than descriptions in communicating what the product was.

Through this experiment, King Living also discovered that their customers do not need a button to go to ‘Products’, which influenced the company’s Product Listing Page and Product Detailing Page redesign.

We noticed that our users don’t actually need a button to go to ‘Products’, so that’s influencing our design decisions in the whole PLP, PDP redesign.

Vanja Stace, King Living Chief Experience Officer

Improve customer conversion by building stronger call-to-action

King Living noticed a substantial number of drop-offs on their check-out page, and pinpointed a few areas for improvement regarding their call-to-action (CTA) – inactive appearance, usage of internal speak and lack of focal point. These factors combined resulted in a CTA difficult for customers to comprehend.

In this experiment, they bolded the important points and translated internal speak into understandable language for consumers. King Living also made their call-to-action appear more visible by shifting away from grey, which is known as the colour of inaction. Through this experiment, King Living’s revenue grew by an astounding 15%.

Having an engaging CTA is important, even at the end of the purchase journey. Consumers are more compelled to follow through with their purchase when the CTA “speaks” to them. This makes a huge difference in minimising drop-offs.

“We had a 15% increase in revenue while that test was running – millions of dollars when you look at it in an annual sense,” Vanja says.

How a Dedicated Optimization Program Helped Fragrance Direct Delight Its Customers

+21% Revenue Uplift

+20% Increase in Transactions

Fragrance Direct is a UK-based pure-play beauty retailer who has been operating since 1993. It sells over 14,000 products across 600 big-name brands, designer labels, and high street favorites. In addition to fragrances, Fragrance Direct sells makeup, skincare, and haircare products from both everyday and luxury brands. Fragrance Direct has been partnering with AB Tasty for over 2 years, and for just under 2 years with Endless Gain.

The Objective

To improve Fragrance Direct’s customers’ experience and generate the business more sales and profit. AB Tasty and Endless Gain approached this in three key ways with outstanding results.

The Approach

Social proof messaging helps instill trust in Fragrance Direct among customers

Research showed that the wider market awareness of Fragrance Direct was quite low. A variety of social proof messages were successfully introduced to new customers. These social proof experiences delivered an increase of over 8% in the user conversion rate.

Personalization helps strengthen an already-strong trading period

Fragrance Direct does very well during three gifting seasons: Valentine’s Day, Mother’s Day, and Christmas, through the Fragrance Finder page.

However, research showed that traffic volumes were low on this page (even during peak periods) despite high conversion rates, and users surveyed said they didn’t actually know what they were looking for from a gifting point of view when they arrived on this page. Using AB Tasty’s Audiences feature, Endless Gain identified users arriving on-site either looking for gifts or unsure about what to buy. These specific user segments were prompted with the question “Searching for gift?”.

Users who clicked on the prompt were taken to the Fragrance Finder page where they were then able to, through a series of personalized questions, engage with and find their desired gift.
The prompt was not shown to users who were not looking for gifts, in order to avoid distracting them and disrupting their journey with the brand. With tactical usage, this personalized strategy delivered a 10% increase in the user conversion rate for Fragrance Direct during their peak periods.

Helping customers checkout faster, and easily, increases sales

Multiple pieces of research highlighted the checkout funnel as one of the key priorities. Various steps within the funnel (and the fields within them) caused considerable friction for customers. Each of these elements, either singularly or combined, were likely to be harming conversions. Endless Gain redesigned multiple elements with the checkout. Through experimentation, the improvements increased the user conversion rate by 2%.

“Using AB Tasty, an efficient and flexible experimentation and personalization platform, enabled us to build on our optimization approach. To continue to build on that, we decided to hire Endless Gain. Working with Endless Gain means we get dedicated resources who are focused 100% of their time on improving our
customers experience without the distraction of day-to-day business challenges.”

Pets at Home Drives More Users to the Checkout & Confirmation Page

>3% Increase in users reaching the basket page

>2.5% More users reaching the confirmation page

Pets at Home is the UK’s largest pet care business and provides pet owners with everything they need to be able to look after their pet – from food, toys and bedding, and grooming services, to first opinion veterinary care and world-class specialist veterinary hospitals.

The Challenge

Analysis indicated that Pets at Home’s users were not progressing further down the purchase funnel, with over two-thirds of users not moving past the basket page to reach checkout. It became clear that the website needed to be optimized to lower the abandonment rate and push more users into checkout.

Test Hypothesis

To lower the abandonment rate, the team at Pets at Home decided to implement a pop-up displaying the user’s basket items upon returning to the website. Reminding users of the items in their basket would hopefully encourage them to view their basket and drive more users to ultimately convert.

Winning Variation – Saved Basked Prompt

Results

The test was set up to target desktop users who had at least one product in their basket. Directing approximately half of their traffic to the variation, the variation proved successful after having run for 3 weeks. The variation significantly drove more users to the checkout & confirmation page.

“Introducing a saved basket prompt for returning users when they return on Pets at Home’s website increased more users to checkout and convert. We’ll also be running this test on mobile to see how this performs.” – Halima Satheya, Digital Optimisation Lead @ Pets at Home

Luxury Brand Frette Increases Revenue By Over 8% with Web Copy Optimization

8.69% Increase in revenue

2 A/B tests

Frette has been a symbol of luxury since its establishment in 1860. Its linens have been draped across the altar of St. Peter’s Basilica, were the bedding of choice for European royal families, and continue to be a staple of five-star hotels.

Challenge

In the luxury industry, there’s always been a strong emphasis on the buying experience. Retailers have imbued it with a sense of ceremony—exclusivity paired with exceptional customer service to create a one-of-a-kind exchange. One of the challenges luxury retailers face today is translating the in-store experience to digital platforms.

For the Frette team, bringing the brand ethos online meant creating a frictionless user experience. Their website needed to be receptive to visitors’ interests while having an elegant design and easy-to-navigate interface. Frette focused on optimizing the website’s top navigation bar and the call-to-action on the shopping cart pop-up to ensure synchronicity between the UX and online shoppers.

Test Idea

Frette conducted a simple A/B test to see if modifying the top navigation bar would optimize the customer journey and increase traffic to certain pages. Noting that bathrobes were the top search item on the site, the team decided to clearly reference them in the header. So, they changed “Bath Linens” to “Bath Linens & Robes” and implemented action tracking to chart the results.

navigation bar

Then, Frette focused on the purchasing funnel. When users would click on the shopping cart in the top corner of the site, a customary pop-up would appear with a preview of selected items and the option to “Proceed To Checkout.” Luxury shopping is generally marked by long lead-in times, so Frette decided to tweak this language to the less definitive call-to-action, “View Shopping Bag.” The goal was to create a more fluid transition from browsing to purchasing in which customers didn’t feel rushed.

shopping cart pop-up

Results

While these website modifications were relatively minor, they had a significant impact on engagement and sales.

By adding “Robes” to the Bath Linens title in the top navigation bar, Frette was able to increase clicks to this category by 29%, and visits to bathrobe pages grew by an astounding 101%. As for changing the checkout semantics, the wording “View Shopping Bag” increased clicks by 5% and bumped total revenue by 8.69%.

These two A/B tests each took approximately 15 minutes to implement, without any IT support. Having the autonomy to test and learn is crucial for website optimization; it allows for precision in your strategy so even subtle changes have a pivotal effect on visitors’ satisfaction.

“We had been using [a previous conversion optimization] tool and it wasn’t user-intuitive, you really needed to work with an agency to do something very simple—you couldn’t really customize it to track specific things for a campaign, not in the way that AB Tasty allow you to. What we’re doing with AB Tasty now on our own, we would not have been able to do before.” – Vivienne So, Sr. Manager of E-commerce at Frette

Kiehl’s Increases Revenue by 31% with Basket Page Optimization

+5% Basket size

+31% Total revenue

Inspired by other brands in the L’Oréal Luxe portfolio, such as Lancôme, Biotherm, Urban Decay and YSL Beauty, the digital teams at Kiehl’s started working with AB Tasty in January 2018. With the help of Léa Benquet, their dedicated Customer Success Manager, the team was even able to surpass their initial targets.

Challenge

Our e-commerce clients often have the same main KPI: maximize the total revenue generated on their website. As for Kiehl’s, they have an impressive success story to tell: the brand began selling their products in stores such as Colette (in 1997) before opening their own boutiques (almost 15 in France). Naturally, their proprietary website’s performance is particularly vital to the brand.

In order to tackle this challenge head on, the digital teams at Kiehl’s decided to concentrate on the basket page. The idea? Create a visual that would be presented to the shopper before they finalized their purchase, encouraging them to take advantage of a free gift over a certain basket amount. For the brand, the advantages are numerous: increase the average order value (interested shoppers will increase their basket size in order to receive the gift), as well as strengthen client loyalty with exclusive, branded Kiehl’s gifts!

A/B Test

Kiehl’s decided to implement a sort of visual gauge on the basket page that indicates how much more the browser has to add to their basket in order to get the gift (in this case, a free product).

AB Tasty’s WYSIWYG editor made it easy to implement this visual barometer. In order to determine how well the test performed, different KPIs were measured, such as the click rate, access to the rest of the purchase funnel, number of transactions and the impact on the average basket size.

Kiehl's AB Tasty A/B Test“One of our e-commerce clients’ biggest expectations is to be able to increase their average basket size per visitor. With Kiehl’s, our main challenge was to find a way to optimize this KPI by combining agility, scalability and a visual effect. We consider our work here a success since this campaign’s positive performance inspired other brands in the L’Oréal group.” – Léa Benquet, Customer Success Manager at AB Tasty

Results

Kiehl’s website visitors were particularly receptive to this barometer. This very visible incentive led to 7% more clicks on the CTA ‘continue’, and importantly, it also led to an increase in the average basket size of almost 5%! We also were able to report an increase in total revenue of 31%, with 25% more additional purchases and 31% more revenue per visitor.

Takeaway Tip

The urgency principle is being used more and more frequently. However, it needs to be applied intelligently. The trick is to find the right balance between creating anxiety in the shopper, while at the same time offering them a substantive incentive (free shipping, exclusive gift, etc.). Showing how much one needs to spend before receiving a free gift isn’t enough anymore: it’s the visual aspect – the barometer – that makes the message truly impactful. The image allows one to better retain the message. A semantic incentive, coupled with a relevant visual, is the perfect combination for prompting an internet user to make a decision at this stage in the purchase funnel.

How Ashley Furniture Increased Conversions by +15%

+15% Conversions

-4% Bounce rate

Context

As a leading furniture and bedding company in the United States, Ashley Furniture generates a high volume of visitors to its online store, AshleyFurnitureHomeStore.com. For this reason, optimizing its purchase process was a key step in improving conversion rates for new visitors.

Issue

How to eliminate frustration during the purchase process to ensure hassle-free checkout conversions?

Objective

Reduce the amount of time spent in the purchase funnel and lead the user to a faster and more effective conversion.

Implementation

We hypothesized that Ashley Furniture was struggling to convert new visitors due to their lengthy checkout process. On the original site, if the user did not enter their delivery and billing address while creating their  account, they would need to add in this information during the conversion funnel.

We decided to remove this step from the conversion funnel and test if that would improve conversion rates. The question was where in the customer journey this step would be implemented?

We tested a variation where, if the user had not entered their address information during the initial account creation phase, they would be prompted to log in to their account, then led to a form where they would be asked to fill in their delivery address.

Step 1 in the original checkout process

Ashley HomeStore step 2
Step 2 in the original checkout process

Ashley HomeStore variation
Simplified checkout process

The objective of this test was to get the user to fill in their personal information before checkout, thus saving them time and simplifying the purchase process. We know that checkout is already a lengthy process with a number of different steps such as logging in, selecting a delivery option and payment method before finalizing a purchase. Our goal was to simplify this process as much as possible.

Results

With this test, we eliminated client frustration by shortening the checkout process, thus reducing cart abandonment rates during the checkout process and creating a more fluid transition to the payment step. By removing this form from the purchase funnel, conversion rates increased by 15%.

“We use AB Tasty to execute A/B and multivariate tests and personalization of our online store AshleyFurnitureHomestore.com. Currently, our UX teams use AB Tasty to gain knowledge of user experience to solve a range of problems and to build new functionalities. With this tool, it is easy to A/B test our ideas to learn whether our hypothesis increases conversion rates, before implementing them on all of our traffic.” – Matt Sparks, eCommerce Optimization Manager, Ashley Furniture
